What is this?
Corona in my County is an informational website drawing together a variety of resources related to the current COVID-19 outbreak in the United States. It is intended to give a more localized view of the status of the virus. A variety of data is presented in an attempt to give a broad image of both impact and preparedness.
What is COVID-19?
Recently, the spread of COVID-19 accelerated greatly in the United States, prompting many emergency responses. "Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person. The virus that causes COVID-19 is a novel coronavirus that was first identified during an investigation into an outbreak in Wuhan, China." (CDC.gov)
Why did you make this?
When the NY Times announced they were releasing all their data on COVID-19, I knew I had to use it to make something cool. Because I don't have a lot of experience in data analysis/visualization, I decided to make something informational to present the data on a local level. I also built an API for working with the data, which I thought could be helpful for others.
What is it built with?
All datasets can be viewed lower down, but tech-wise I used Flask as an API backend, along with MySQL for storage. Data sources are periodically synced and brought into the database. Click here to see the API DataSet Index.
Check out the API
The API draws together a variety of datasources to present the information on this site, and is openly accessible.
